Autumn Term (1)
Well Done Puffins!
What a great start to Year Two, this week we have been getting used to the rules and routines of our new classroom and year group. We have settled in well and have dealt well with the new changes in Year Two.
In Maths we had a week of Inspirational Maths, we completed lots of different challenges where we had to think independently and sometimes in a team, we practised finding things tricky and using resilience to keep on trying and we learnt it is ok to make mistakes!
In English we learnt the story ‘Grandad’s Island’ Mrs Parsons helped us to draw a story map and we added actions to help us remember, we read sentences from the story and found the mistakes and learnt about types of words – adjectives, nouns and verbs.
On Wednesday’s we have Science with Mrs Creasey, on Thursday we have Games with Mr Maxwell and on Friday we have Music with Mr Mogridge.
As ever if you have any questions then feel free to ask Miss Clements at the end of the school day and she will do her best to help.
Well Done Puffins for completing your first full week in Year Two!
In English we have been writing the beginning of our ‘Grandad’s Island’ story, we created our own word banks to help us and looked at the adjectives that were used to add detail to the sentences. In SPAG we were being text detectives and looking for nouns and adjectives. As us about what these word types mean!
In Shared Reading we have been exploring the book ‘The day the crayons came home’ we have been reading the postcards that each of the crayons have sent to Duncan and have enjoyed finding out their reasons for leaving Duncan! Miss Clements likes Esteban the Magnificent (formerly known as Pea Green Crayon) ask us what happened to him…
In Maths we have been exploring place value and the values of each part of a two digit number. We have been practising making numbers with Numicon and pictures and have been rehearsing using the correct vocabulary (tens and ones) we will continue this work next week!
On Tuesday morning Miss Pullen called us in for an assembly before lunch! She had found some items and wanted our help to discover where they had come from! We had items like a bucket and spade, pineapples, passport covers and a brightly patterned shirt! After lunch we came in to see that Year Two had changed! We spent the afternoon travelling to Hawaii, we got to make different fruit juices and try different exotic fruit, we made our own lei’s, did some Hawaiian dancing and played some fun beach games. We will continue learning more about islands as our topic progresses. Hope you like looking at our holiday pictures!
Hope you enjoy keeping up to date with our learning and adventures!
Well done to our Reader of the Week – Courtney
Yet another busy week in Puffin Class!
In English we have been innovating our story ‘Grandad’s Island’ we changed how our main characters Syd and Grandad were going to travel and where they were going to go. We experimented with different ideas and looked at adding adjectives to make our story more interesting.
In SPAG we have looked at capital letters and full stops in sentences as well as different sentence types – questions and statements.
In Maths we have continued our work on place value and the value of each part of a two digit number. We explored the counting in 10’s patterns and began to look at different ways to partition our numbers using the pan balances and Numicon shapes.
In Topic we looked at human and physical features in our local area. Human features are things that are made or have been built. Physical features are natural and grow. We then took a trip to Portsdown Hill on Friday morning to see the different human and physical features from high above the city. We were also lucky enough to be able to watch an air ambulance land on top of the hospital!
Our main school trip to the Isle of Wight is on Wednesday, please make sure all letters and pink forms have been returned to the office, make sure children are dressed appropriately with sensible shoes and coats and a backpack as they will be carrying their own lunches. Any questions feel free to ask.
Well done to our Reader of the Week – LEXI!
Well done to our Star of the Week Lily-Mae
A very busy week of exploring in Puffin Class!
On Wednesday we ventured across to the Isle of Wight, we sailed across the Solent on the ferry and walked along the pier to the beach. It was so misty so it was tricky to see Portsmouth! We talked about the Human and Physical features and sketched the Watch Tower and the view from the harbour.
In English we have been writing our innovated story – ‘Grandad’s Park’ we used all of the writing skills we have learnt and tried hard to use the phonics and word banks to spell the words correctly.
In Maths we have continued our work on Place Value and did some more work on using the comparison symbols (> < =) to show our knowledge of numbers.
Please continue the great work with our reading at home, next Friday our reading records will be checked and we will receive our first reading star on our reading charts if we have read five times at home this week.
Miss Clements and Puffin Class
In English this week we have invented our own story for our independent writing. We used what we had learnt from our original story of ‘Grandad’s Island’ and changed it to include our own characters and setting and even wrote our own ending.
In Maths we have been using our place value to help us with adding and subtracting numbers to 20.
In Topic we received a postcard from Moana asking for information about the Isle of Wight. We replied to her postcard telling her lots of information about the Isle of Wight and the adventures we had got up to on our trip.
In Art we used the first page of our new sketch books to draw a self portrait. We used mirrors to look closely at our faces and for the details we needed to include. These sketch books will follow us through our journey at Northern Parade so we will be able to see how our skills have progressed.
Well Done to the children who were able to move up to the Dragon in the Dragon Readathon this week. Children were able to collect their first stamp on their dragon card if they had read 5 times or more at home this week.
Well done to the Star of the Week Oliver.
Thank you, Miss Clements & Puffin Class.
In English we have been exploring the ideas of magic and what it meant to us, we then discovered a Magic Box! we used our best adjectives to describe what we thought might be inside. Then on Friday the Magic Box opened! Inside we found lots of magical and inspiring objects such as a colourful kaleidoscope, a shiny mini metal key and a magic horn from a unicorn.
In Maths we have been exploring addition. We have finding out the best and most efficient ways to add together multiples of ten. We have begun to look at the idea of taking away and will continue this, this week.
In Topic we have been looking at the idea of Portsmouth being an island! We explored it using Google Maps and then worked together as a class to create a key to use on our maps to show where important places were.
In Shared Reading we have been looking at Non Fiction texts about volcanoes! we have been focusing on our comprehension skills and having to read the text to find the answers instead of making up our own. Please help us to continue developing this skill by asking us questions when we read our reading books to you at home.
Thank you for your continued support.
