Gold book winners this week are ...
Autumn Term (1)
Welcome back after the holiday’s. I hope everyone is refreshed and ready to go. We have started back really well this week and are busy learning all the changes that have taken place. English we are learning about ‘Grandad’s Island’. A story that we are learning and going to eventually change. Maths is all about inspirational maths and how making mistakes is something that we can learn from. We also started shared reading and the mini-big quiz. Next week you will find out who won.
This week has been very busy in Year 2 with lots of things going on.
In maths, as you can see from the photo, we have been a very busy class investigating place value using Numicon and Dienes blocks to help us understand. In English we have been learning our story in more depth and using actions to help us. Through the week, whilst learning the story, we have also tried writing the first couple of paragraphs. We have done a very good job, although we need to remember some of our writing skills like capital letters and full stops!
Our mini-big quiz winner is …. Dauntless. Well done keep up the good reading!
This week has Toucan class have been working very hard in all maths, English, shared reading and topic. We have started to look at changing some things in our story that we learned last week. In maths we have continued to explore two digit numbers and how we can describe them and compare them with each other. We have learned about human and physical features in topic, just in time for our trip to Portsdown Hill. We are now ready to explore the Isle of Wight and compare the different places we know of.
This half term we are reading
Well done to our Reader of the Week – POPPY!
Well done to our Star of the week Scarlett-Rose.
We been working very hard this week in all our subjects. In reading we have now finished our first text, but unfortunately as we have been so busy with our reading lessons, maths, English and topic we ran out of time in our timetable to take part in this weeks mini big quiz. We will try and squeeze it in next week. We have now started to adapt, learn and now write our new version of Grand’s Island and there has been some fantastic work here. Keep it up Toucan Class.
Also we had a fantastic time on the Isle of Wight, looking at the physical and human features of both Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. We also had a brilliant contest over who could build the best sand castle using physical features around them.
Well done to all of you. It was far too hard to pick a winner.
Well done to our Star of the Week – Montgomery!
This week we have been working hard on inventing our own story from using the original story of ‘Grandad’s Island’. In our maths this week we have been exploring numbers and again we have been working hard on this and now we have started looking at addition and subtraction and how these are linked. In our shared reading this week we have been looking at predicting what the text could be about and looking at some inference around the text that we have been concentrating on. We have also been having some fun in class where we have been looking at drawing a self portrait of ourselves and the drawings have been very good and interesting.
This week in Toucan class we received a special delivery. It was a magic box. We explored the word magic and thought what might be inside the box! Next week we will be learning a poem called ‘The Magic Box’ before we invent our own ‘Magic Box’ poem. In maths this week we have been exploring the language inverse and commutative and how we use this in maths.
In maths we have been looking at different ways to solve addiction and subtraction problems and what resources we can use to help us. We have tried using number squares, number lines and different numicon resources.
In English this week we have been looking at our new text the Magic Box and learning the actions to help us with the story. The last couple of days we have started to write the poem before we think about writing our own.
This week we have also had Dr Collins in class this week showing us some magic tricks.
Well done to our Star of the week – POPPY!
Autumn Term (2)
This week in class we have been very busy with some ‘inspirational maths’, writing, some shared reading and some exciting stuff in our science lessons.
In our English lessons this week we have been thinking about what type of things we could put inside our own magic box. We have thought about it, planned it and written about it. We have done a fantastic job in doing this, well done Toucans.
In maths we have been having fun in trying to get inspired in maths and thinking about a variety of things that will help us in maths. In our reading this week we have started exploring the poem ‘The Sea’ by John Foster and again we have been trying to have some fun with this poem.
Mrs Creasey has been having some fun in class as well with exploring science.
Well done to our Star of the Week – Mark!
Well done to Star of the Week – HARRY
This week we have had a very busy week in school. In English we have been learned actions to our new text and now we have started to write the text using our story map and actions to help us. In maths this week we have been looking at measure and this has been looking at measuring length, weight and as you can see in the photos having fun with capacity!
Topic this week has been a little messy! We have had fun paper macheing and creating our islands. Can’t wait for you to see the end results!!
Star of the week was Kornelia
This week in Toucan Class we have been exploring 2d shape and symmetry. In English we have been changing our non-fiction text so that we can create a piece of writing on Portsmouth next week. We have had some lovely lessons in shared reading when we were looking at a poem on the sea. I have read some fantastic poems that the children have created. We have also had the chance to go outside and explore building some outdoor shelters.
My ROW this week was Scarlett
Gold book was Kai J and Harry C
No big quiz winner this week.
Well done to our Star of the Week – SPENCER
This week has been a very busy week building up to our topic presentation. All the children in class have been working so hard and did amazingly well to present in front of all the parents. In maths we have done a lot of exploring of different shapes, both 2d and 3D shapes. We have done a lot of hard work in topic this week where we have looked at setting descriptions and produced some lovely writing.
Well done to our Star of the Week – ALICE!
Spring Term (1)
Week 1 and 2
This week in school we have started to look at repeated addition and how this links to multiplication and fraction. With fractions we have concentrated on half of numbers and objects so we are also making links with division. English has seen us explore our new text of Julia Donaldson books, but looking at one specific book, which we have now learnt, written, changed and also written that new text. Looking forward where our stories are going to go next week. We have also had a visit from Dr Collins this week, where she has explored classification.
Spring Term 2
Math's this week in Toucan class we have been looking at multiplication and division in more detail. We have been looking at strategies we can use to work out a number sentence that has 2 two digit numbers. We have also been using our comparison symbols to compare to amounts that we have worked out. Again we have been thinking about strategies that we can use to work out addition and subtraction sums that have 2 two digit numbers.
In English this week we have been thinking about how we can change and create our own instructions of how to make a mask. We have made a mask and made notes on how we made it and then used those notes to make our plans for our writing.
There are some amazing masks that have been made!
Gold book Spencer Fleet - using strategies to add and subtract 2 two digit numbers.
Roxy Fry - creating an amazing invention plan for their instructions
ROW - George Stewart
This week in school we have been using empty number lines for addition and subtraction. We have been partitioning numbers to help us with our number line calculations. We have also been working on solving addition and subtraction word problems, making links about how we can use the inverse to help us.
In English we have been exploring the characters in ‘The Ugly Five’ by Julia Donaldson. We have planned, written and edited our own character descriptions, based on the animal we chose. We have also been looking at how to use different types of sentences and include them in our writing. We have created some great hyena descriptions!
