King's Group Academies

Hi Year 1!

You have had a fantastic start to the year and have settled in extremely well. You have adapted to your new teacher, classrooms and adults in the year group and we are very excited about what is to come for the rest of the year.

This week you have challenged yourself to follow the rules and overcome any worries that you may have had. We are very proud of you all.

In maths this week we have been doing inspirational maths. This means that we have explored ways to overcome challenges and struggles in maths and our everyday learning. We looked at how 'speed is not important' when completing tasks making links to the tortoise and the hare and thought about what a mathematician looks like. Ideas ranged from someone being able to count to someone being able to use their brains to solve challenging problems.

In English we have immersed ourselves into the text 'Handa's surprise'. We have focused on the language we could use to describe different fruits in the text and we did this by tasting them too. We have used actions to retell the story and created a class story map. We also learnt how to label a range of different fruits that were in a fruit basket. The children were extremely resilient with their learning this week.

For shared reading we explored what 'text' is and how there are many words around us. The children created a poster of where they can see text. Each child has been allocated a reading book that they will keep in school to read to the adults. Continue to share books with your children at home and log onto reading buddy if you would like your child to read to you.

Out of this world.

Our topic this term is going to be all about space. The children discovered that something peculiar had happened in the hall. There were space boots, footprints and moon rocks everywhere and the children thought about what it would be like in space.

As a year group we would like to thank you for your continued support in keeping the children safe and well.

We are looking forward to another exciting week ahead.

The year 1 team.
